HA1 Task 3 – Graphic Types

Pixel Art
Pixel Art in games is when the art style of the game is pixelated, with many objects/characters being big blocks of colour and sprites. Many games using this style are called 'retro' and became popular in recent years, especially in the indie game market. 'Infectonator: World Dominator' is a pixel flash game.

Concept Art
Concept art is an idea that has been projected onto a screen or piece of paper. This is used to flesh out ideas of characters and environments. Without concept art, developers may have a more difficult time knowing what things should look like, and may have conflicting ideas with others. The image below is concept art of the game 'Fallout: New Vegas', showing an idea of what an area in the game could look like.

Texture Art
Texture art is all of the textures on objects and characters in games. Textures are made flat, and then get wrapped around a polygon mesh to make a realistic-looking 3D models. It is like if all of someone's skin was removed then laid out flat, and when the person (3D model) is textured, the skin is put on, wrapped all around them.

Background Graphics
Background graphics are everything in the background of a game that isn't directly interacted with by the player. Destiny's background graphics are massive and dynamic, making the environments in the game look more alive and larger than it actually is. This sets the stage for the game and make it look real and makes the experience more immersive for the player.

Print Media Art
Print Media Art is any type of graphical work that isn't on a screen which can be used for marketing and advertising a game. can be anything from the art on the cover of a video game, to posters and packaging boxes. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag has cover art that shows the title of the game, and the main character, with more in the background. This shows what the game is about before even buying/playing it.
